Three decades after the conception of geographic information systems (GIS), there are primarily two viewpoints in the cartographic world towards its mapping products: either you love it, or you hate it. At Cartisan, our cartographers and the rest of our map staff understand GIS. We embrace the technology for what it does well, while employing a host of other tools and mapping applications to supplement our GIS map products.

If you're unfamiliar with geographic information systems, we invite you to read our GIS summary..

Nearly every one of the maps we make begins to take form in a GIS. Using a vast amount of geospatial data, within a matter of moments, your map and your data can be put into an accurate and appropriate map projection. We can perform spatial queries, augment it with other data, and employ a number of powerful GIS manipulations.

Traditionally, GIS software is known to produce an ugly map, thus the apprehension that many map design firms have for GIS. Using advanced GIS tools, traditional artistic creativity, and additional graphic design applications, Cartisan cartographers are unfamiliar with this "ugly map" syndrome. In fact, often other cartographers are surprised to find out that many of our maps are GIS products.

We don't make ugly maps - we're just excellent cartographers.
